Young golfers sparkles

WESTERN BUREAU:

THIRTY-FOUR JUNIOR golfers from schools across St. James were awarded medals, trophies and a variety of other prizes recently after their good showing in the second-annual SuperClubs Ironshore Junior Golf Summer Camp.

After watching the 70 aspiring golfers vying against each other in various age-group categories for boys and girls, Mrs. Suzette Smith-Burgess, the club's general manager, singled out George Simpson, Andre Cotterell, Kahlil Weatherly, Oludiad Brown, Matthew Bird, Dean Weatherly, Ashley Reid, Kyle Smith, Alanna Williams, Sheena Sanderson, Mason Bird and David Sackaloo for special meritorious mention.

Thirty of the youngster, who were victorious in the various group tournament, were chosen to represent SuperClubs Ironshore Golf and Country Club in upcoming competitions. They are also being viewed for possible selection to Jamaica's national youth team.

According to Smith-Burgess, the seven-week outing, during which the youngsters showed off their golfing prowess, was "incredibly successful" from the points of view of the enthusiastic participation of the youngsters and sponsorship input the event attracted.

"SuperClubs Ironshore Golf and Country Club has been highly motivated by the camp," Smith-Burgess said. "We've already begun planning for an even bigger outing of over 100 young student golfers next
summer."

For their success, the winners in the various tournament got prizes such as Digicel telephones, passes to North Coast resorts, visitor attractions and cinemas, and items from various in-bond stores.

While Smith Burgess thanked corporate Montego Bay for sponsoring various aspects of the camp ­ particularly daily lunches, snacks and beverages, the parents of the children, who participated, reciprocated by expressing pleasure at the high standard of the outing.
