'Lili' possible threat to Jamaica

THE METEOROLOGICAL Office last night issued a tropical storm watch for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Lili continued on a track taking it very close to the island.

This means that tropical storm conditions pose a possible threat to Jamaica within 24 hours.

At 5:00 p.m. yesterday, the poorly defined centre of Lili was located near 450 kilometres south of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic or 800 kilometres east-southeast of Morant Point, Jamaica.

Lili is moving towards west-northwest at 11 km/h. On the forecast track, the centre of Lili was expected to pass about 200 km south of the Dominican Republic last night and move between Jamaica and Haiti about 240 km east of Morant Point Friday morning. Fishers on the cays and banks especially those on the Morant and Pedro Cays are advised to evacuate immediately.

  • Other small craft operators in our coastal waters should return to port and those already in port are urged not to venture out.
  • Showers and thunderstorms are also expected for the next three days.
