ST. ANDREW NORTH EASTERN - Chuck: A winner Anthony Myers

By Anthony Myers, Contributors

IN ST. Andrew North Eastern the best hope for the PNP is a good second.

Delroy Chuck, the incumbent MP is the JLP's candidate and Leonard Green is running for the PNP.

In the 1992 constituencies (boundaries) adjustments, St. Andrew North Eastern evolved from the former St. Andrew North Central.

The constituency of St. Andrew North Eastern is bounded from Half-Way Tree Square at the junction of Constant Spring Road, Half-way Tree Road and Hope Road, easterly along the northern side of Hope Road to Matilda's Corner at the junctions of Hope Road, Old Hope Road and Barbican Road. It then goes northerly along the western side of Barbican Road to Widcombe Road, northerly along the western side of Widcombe Road and Mountain Spring Roads to the foothills (so as to include all of Mountain Spring), westerly along the foothills to the No. 6 mile post on Jacks Hill Road. It then travels westerly along the southern side of Jacks Hill Road to Sunset Avenue, along Sunset Avenue to a point opposite the Sandy Gully, from this point north westerly in an arbitrary line to the Sandy Gully, southerly along the eastern side of the Gully to Shortwood Road, southerly along the northern and eastern sides of Shortwood Road to its intersection with Grants Pen Road, westerly along the southern side of Grants Pen Road. From there it goes to Constant Spring Road to West Avenue, south westerly along the eastern side of West Avenue to Dukharan Avenue, continuing south westerly and southerly along the eastern side of Dukharan to Dunrobin Avenue, easterly along the northern side of Dunrobin Avenue to where it meets Constant Spring Road, southerly along the eastern side of Constant Spring Road to the starting point.

Douglas Vaz (JLP), who had shifted from North Central to contest North Eastern polled 5,456 votes in 1989 to defeat by 650 votes, Peter Thomas (PNP), who polled 4,806. In a nail-biting finish in 1993, Karlene Kirlew-Robertson (PNP), defeated Douglas Vaz (JLP), by 62 votes.

In 1997, inspite of the former JLP stalwart Douglas Vaz running on a NDM ticket, the dynamic and charismatic Delroy Chuck (JLP), defeated the incumbent PNP candidate Karlene Kirlew-Robertson by a convincing 1,449 majority. The JLP polled 4,779, the PNP 3,330, the NDM 1,459 and the Independent candidate, 38. The name Delroy Chuck is now a household name in St. Andrew North East. Consequently, the best hope for the PNP is a good second. As I have often said there is no prize for second place in this kind of contest.
