An outrageous proposal

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS A Jamaican residing in the USA, I cannot agree more strongly with the letter written by Miss Pamela Jones, published in your September 25, 2002 issue of The Gleaner, concerning the proposal to dump New York's garbage in the Caribbean islands.

I am deeply gratified to learn that our young people studying in this country are indeed concerned with matters that affect our region of the world. I highly commend Miss Jones, and join with her and others, in telling New York Governor Bloomberg to keep his garbage, better yet, dump it in his mansion. The Caribbean is not, and should never become the garbage receptacle for the United States. I strongly agree that the spectacle of ethocentricism rears its ugly head in the very thought of such an outrageous proposal.

I am, etc.,
