Not a garrison constituency

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I REFER to your publication of September 12, 2002 with the headline "Garrisons warned Eight put on notice about electoral malpractices" which makes reference to South St. Catherine as a garrison constituency. Against the background of all the prevailing definitions of "garrison constituency", South St. Catherine has never been so classified.

Your article makes reference to statements made by the Director of Elections regarding Election Day plans by the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ). I am advised that South St. Catherine was not categorised as a garrison. Rather, the Director advised that he indicated that there are some clusters of polling stations throughout the country that the EOJ will be paying special security attention to on Election Day. In the case of South St. Catherine, the cluster of polling stations that the EOJ makes reference to is at the McCauley Primary School on Duncan's Pen Road in Spanish Town.

I must advise that I continue to be bombarded by telephone calls from numerous persons who have been residing in the constituency for many years and have relished the fact that they are NOT residing in a constituency that is categorised as "garrison".

I am, etc.,

FITZ A. JACKSON, M.P.

South St. Catherine
