I WRITE not to congratulate nor castigate Mr. Golding regarding his decision to rejoin the JLP. I am unable to state with any measure of certainty whether this action is evidence of political pragmatism or, as his detractors would have us believe, immoral political opportunism. Perhaps, it is a shade of both, as hardly anything is ever clearly delimited in black and white. Great leaders are characterised by their moral character, they may change their minds but they will never compromise their integrity. In Mr. Golding's case only time may tell and the people will judge.
However, what I find curious is this impending two-pronged campaign approach to be undertaken by the JLP headed by Mr. Seaga and Mr. Golding. I've been made to understand that Mr. Golding is regarded as a bright and articulate man. I wonder, of the 59 other persons in the JLP seeking to represent and lead the nation, is there no one else capable enough to assume this level of responsibility? Is no one else able to effectively communicate the party's position? I cannot imagine this would be the case. I would hope to see some clarification forthcoming on this concern in the days ahead.
