THE EDITOR, Sir:
MR. DELROY CHUCK frequently writes on economic matters and he apparently views the economic policies of the government as a disaster. History tells me that his political tribe would have performed equally badly.
What I find interesting is that whichever political tribe is in power with whatever economic policies, the Chinese business community excels economically. Look at the vast expansion in the retail trade, e.g. Super Plus, in an economy that is on the brink of disaster (as Mr. Chuck sees it). I hail and admire the Chinese business community. It is obvious that they are not seeing economic disaster like Mr. Chuck.
I would like Mr. Chuck to tell me what is it that the Chinese business community are doing that many of us are not. What is their economic formula for success in this area of economic disaster. I suspect that they grew up in a culture that taught them to live within their means, to spend less than they earn, to avoid profiling with the latest fashion in clothes and material well-being and to save and be thrifty in monetary matters.
If and when your political tribe attains power, I will be looking forward to them instilling these values and attitudes in the broad mass.
I invite Mr. Chuck to reply with simplicity and clarity.
I am, etc.,
