JC blank DQ

JAMAICA COLLEGE (JC) shrugged off a lethargic first half show as substitute Andrew Davis netted twice in a 2-0 win over Donald Quarrie (DQ) as Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup football action resumed yesterday.

The competition had taken a break due to bad weather over the past few days but JC were not the only ones in winning form.

Excelsior, Haile Selassie and Campion College also topped their respective opponents but yesterday's big surprise was Penwood's 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Innswood at Chalmer's Avenue.

At Jamaica College field, DQ did enough to stay competitive and were grateful for a 0-0 tie at halftime but were silenced five minutes into the second half when Davis scored.

JC were reduced to 10 players three minutes after the goal when Kevon Elliot was issued a red card for violent conduct. Donald Quarrie failed to capitalise on this but like a scavenger, JC's Davis hunted the opportunities and put his team at ease with goal number two in the 60th minute.

"I think we did very well in defence. We were a bit lethargic in the first half due to the long lay-off but we did what we needed to do to get three more points," said JC coach Glen Laing.

"We have a good bench and it's good to know that we have someone like Davis who can lift when situations arise. Donald Quarrie did not seem like they came to win so we took the game to them," he said.

DQ's coach, Owen Wright, disagreed with Laing's assessment.

"We played well but we were just not shooting. JC looked a bit more purposeful than us and it was clear that they wanted to win but we did well.

"I'm not satisfied with the result and maybe the lack of training had something to do with the performance. We got our chances but we were not finishing so that's an area we need to work on some more," he said.
