THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a non-resident Jamaican watching the upcoming election with much interest. I remember as a child my grandfather ringing his bell for the JLP because of all the many empty promises they made - run the pipes (we being country people) give them light and repair the roads. Some 20 years later and those same roads are still in need of repair.
We ought to be smarter people now and should know that education (not empty promises) is the key to an individual's future and therefore will be the key to the nation's future. We should stop shouting 'shower'or 'power' and only do so when it will make a difference in the 'quality' of our lives.
If either Mr. Edward Seaga or Mr. P.J. Patterson is truly serious about decreasing the level of violence that permeates this nation, they had better look at providing better (free) education to the children who are the future and understand that only then will it make a difference. Jamaica does not need any more cell phones, dancehall, designer clothes, fancy cars (with no roads to drive them) and all the other things that see us killing our brothers and our sisters.
We need to demand that the government make education and the reduction of crime their priority and then if they can't deliver, they should be put out of office.
I am etc.,
