Wolmer's maintain unbeaten record

WOLMER'S YESTERDAY maintained their unbeaten record in the 2002 Pepsi-Sports Plus Manning Cup football competition with a 4-0 hammering of Calabar fuelled by the goals of Howard Wong, Luton Shelton, Delano Bullock and Fenton Graham.

With the win they progressed to 12 points from four starts to keep their lead in Group A and are followed by Excelsior, who beat Greater Portmore 3-0, on nine points. Jamaica College also kept up their 100 per cent win record by beating Innswood 3-0.

They are now on 15 points from five games, three ahead of Innswood while Haile Selassie who edged Penwood 2-1 are in third position on seven points.

At Wolmer's, the home team had to wait until the 32nd minute to find the back of the net as they were denied by the inspired keeping of Jason Campbell in goal and the poor shooting of the Wolmer's forwards. A lovely diving header from Wong gave Campbell no chance.

Calabar appeared to be comfortable with a counter-attacking plan but that did not come to fruition as they found it difficult to string passes together. They looked disorganised but still had enough fight to keep the score at 0-1 up to the break.

Within a minute after the break things changed. Sloppy defending and a poor decision by goalkeeper Campbell gave Shelton his goal. With his defender failing to clear a loose ball, Campbell attempted to boot it upfield when picking it up would have been easier.

The ball was blocked and rolled back towards goal while the defenders and the goalkeeper stood and watched Shelton glide by them and place the ball in the net.

Campbell had no more fight in him after that. In the 59th minute Bullock surged out of defence dribbled up the left flank and beat Campbell at his near post.

After a number of other misses including one when captain Shomari Glanville shot wide of an open goal, substitute Graham applied the finishing touch two minutes before time.

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS
