Windies enjoy run feast

Hinds... scored a superb 147 yesterday against the Indian Board President's XI at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in India.

BANGALORE, India, CMC:
OPENING BATSMAN Wavell Hinds slammed an imperious hundred and led a splendid West Indies batting performance against the Indian Board President's XI on the second day of their three-day game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium yesterday.

Hinds stroked 147, and half centuries from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle helped power the West Indies to a commanding 341 for two at the close, replying to the President's XI's first innings score of 275 for eight declared.

There was a 128-run first-wicket stand between Hinds and Gayle (62), and Sarwan, who was not out on 93 at stumps, posted 148 runs for the second wicket with Hinds in a promising build up for the tourists, ahead of the first Test starting on Wednesday in Mumbai.

Resuming at 20 without loss overnight, the Jamaican left-handers Gayle and Hinds punished the President's XI bowlers and placed the West Indies in control.

Gayle, playing with great fluency and timing, belted eight fours and a six before he was caught at cover by Sanjay Bangar driving at offspinner Sarandeep Singh.

Hinds continued to flourish while Sarwan also looked in good form, scoring freely as he takes aim at a seventh first-class century.

Immediately after the West Indies surpassed the President's XI's first innings score, Hinds, who struck 17 fours and four sixes, was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Murali Kartik at 276 for two.

Sarwan has so far struck 13 fours and a six and he will need just seven runs for his century when he resumes his unfinished 65-run stand with Chanderpaul on today's final day.
