Only those who live here should vote

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AFTER READING the Letter of the Day of October 3 and other letters supporting the cause of having non-resident Jamaicans the chance to vote, whom would they vote for? All they would do is to vote for the party they and/or their family voted or are still voting for. They are not in Jamaica to actually live and feel what the people in Jamaica are feeling, so why should they be given a right to choose a government.

Mr. Wayne Webb is talking about the contribution of these non-resident citizens through remittances. Who are they sending their money to? Their family and friends, not the government to help in the building of the country; so that should not be an issue.

I think that if non-resident citizens want to vote they should come back to Jamaica and live and feel what the people are feeling, in the way of crime, economic situations and otherwise.

I am, etc.,

M. WHITTAKER

St. Catherine
