Letter-writer wrong on 'Breeder'

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I note with amusement a letter titled "Breeder" Leader - are they animals now? Apparently, the writer did not check with The Concise Oxford Dictionary 'Breed' can be used as a noun as well as verb, and one of its meanings is "to generate offspring, or to bear."

Therefore there is nothing wrong with humans being referred to as breeder as breeding which is a noun is the process of developing, propagating (plant, animals etc) generation; childbearing; the result of training or education, behaviour and good manners (as produced by an aristocratic heredity) for example 'one has no breeding.'

Therefore, I would suggest to the writer that before making such statements one needs to understand what they are talking about, and if not sure they should always check with the dictionary. The writer has even formed their own word i.e. 'breedie'.

I am, etc.,

M.H.
