Regina Lindo holds alongside her catch while surrounded by her Red Stripe Light crewmates. Lindo hauled in a 423-pound Atlantic Blue Marlin at the Port Antonio Marlin Fishing Tournament this week. - Contributed THE RED Stripe Light sponsored boat, the 'March Ann', with a team including Brian Pengelley and Regina Lindo, hauled in a huge 423-pound Atlantic Blue Marlin at the Port Antonio Marlin Fishing Tournament this week.
Lindo landed the marlin while Pengelley, who was on the verge of landing a similar size catch, lost his. The 423lb marlin is possibly a record for a female angler in Jamaica. It took Lindo one hour and 50 minutes to subdue the fish. It measured 113 inches. This marlin will most likely be the "Red Stripe Light" winner of 2002.
The tournament adopted the International Minimum to land a Blue Marlin of
Lower Jaw to Fork of Tail (LJFT) of 99 inches (8' 3") last year. That's a
pretty big marlin by Jamaican standards. This equates to about 300lb or more.
Anglers are penalised in scoring if a marlin is landed below this size. All are tagged with a number and this is sent to a data bank in Florida which keeps track of when the marlin is resighted - some migrate as far as to South Africa.
The Jamaica record catch is 592lbs by Bobby Miller off Ocho Rios in 1984. The Port Antonio record is held by Mark Myers (588lbs) in 1992.
Twenty-three boats with between 80-90 anglers are fishing each day from Monday until tomorrow. Yesterday was a rest day.
