DR. CHARLTON Collie, the Jamaica Labour Party candidate, and Victor Cummings, the People's National Party candidate for Kingston Central, toured the constituency together yesterday, pleading with supporters to lay down their arms.
The two men visited several volatile areas of the constituency, including JLP strongholds in "Southside" and downtown Kingston and PNP strongholds "Tel-A-Viv," "Spoilers" (Wildman Street) and Allman Town. They spoke with residents about keeping the peace. An MPM dumpster tagged along removing debris used to form road blocks, where possible. But, as soon as they left, many of the road blocks were put back.
Dr. Collie said after the tour that he felt it went very well despite the taunts of PNP supporters which greeted him in their strongholds.
He said that the message was, "A free and fair election and may the best man win."
Mr. Cummings said that he hoped that the joint tour would send a message to the constituents that the two candidates were willing to compete in peace.
