Election madness must stop now!

THE EDITOR, SIR:

IN LIGHT of the bloody weekend past, further action needs to be taken to stem the spate of political madness that is rife in the country. I recommend that the EAC along with the hardworking Political Ombudsman, if they have the power so to do, take the following actions:

a) All political meetings, rallies and tours should stop in all areas and volatile areas should be slapped with a dust-to-dawn curfew with the police and the army out in full force to root out the troublemakers.

b) All of the slanderous utterances in the media put there by politicians from both sides should be withdrawn.

c) The recent proposal by the EAC to ban the use of party colours on Election Day should be enforced without fear or favour.

d) Politicians should be encouraged to use the media to communicate their messages to their constituents.

e) More debate between political candidates should be embarked upon in order to woo last-minute voters, as people want to hear intelligent debate not nonsense and slander to debase people and the country.

f) Politicians should be held responsible and criminally charged for the actions of their supporters as many of them know the troublemakers and since it would appear that they cannot control them, they should hand them over to the police as this dance between gunmen and politician is taking our country to the brink of anarchy.

Our beloved country cannot be allowed to suffer and mourn because of some people who are desperate to gain political power. Many politicians call for peace but peace is not in their hearts and therefore they are engaged in a blame game instead of definitively coming out and stopping their supporters from engaging in war.

Any leader who cannot control their men and women is not fit to lead a country. Any politician who wants to be the next Prime Minister has to be firm, willing to let go off pettiness and slander and make the move to unite people instead of divide them. The survival of the nation depends on this.

I am etc.,
