MANCHESTER:
VIOLENCE HAS erupted in the usually peaceful constituency of Northeast Manchester and a confrontation between factions of the JLP and PNP turned ugly in the town of Christiana early on Monday.
There were reports of persons being shot, the windshields of several vehicles smashed and a candidate's life threatened.
Reports are that about 1:45 a.m., supporters of the PNP were on their way from a meeting at Craighead and a number of JLP supporters were returning from a rally in Kingston. Vehicles were used to partially block the main road and stones used to smashed the windshields of several vehicles. Gunshots were heard coming from the area.
The Gleaner has learnt that four persons who were shot were a part of the entourage of Devon McDaniel, Jamaica Labour Party(JLP) candidate for South Trelawny.
According to Mr. McDaniel, he was accompanied on the tour by about 125 vehicles, 25 of which were extensively damaged by missiles. He said that of the four persons who received gun shots, three were treated and discharged from hospital, while one has been admitted.
Glen Miller, husband of the PNP candidate Dorothy Miller, told The Gleaner that the windshields of his vehicle was also smashed, as well as a sports truck. Her campaign vehicle was also damaged.
