DR. BENJAMIN CARSON, SNR., internationally-acclaimed neurosurgeon, is the scheduled guest speaker for the Homecoming 2002 Banquet being put on by the Mandeville Seventh Day Adventist Church on October 19, 2002.
Dr. Carson's wife, Candy Carson, will also be in attendance at this formal function set for the Kendal Great House in Kendal, Manchester starting at 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Carson author of Helping Hands and other inspirational publications had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. He grew up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper and low self-esteem which seemed to stand in the way of the realisation of his dreams.
However, his mother, Sonya Carson, who believed in him, influenced his thinking and motivated him to strive for excellence. Today, he is the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the John's Hopkins Medical Institutions - a post he has held since 1984 when he was 33 years old. In 1987, he gained world-wide recognition as the principal surgeon in a 22-hour separation of West German Siamese twins joined at the back of the skull - the first such separation with both surviving. In 1997, he led a team of South African and Zambian doctors in the first completely successful separation of the twins joined at the top of the skull - a 28-hour operation.
As a motivational speaker he is highly sought-after and has addressed various audiences. His three books - Gifted Hands, Think Big and the Big Picture - provide inspiration and insight for leading a successful life.
