WESTERN BUREAU:
JAMAICA LABOUR Party (JLP) Leader Edward Seaga said the time has come for successive administrations to move towards improving the quality of life for Jamaicans.
Speaking in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, on Sunday night at the final mass rally before tomorrow's election, Mr. Seaga said neither the JLP nor the People's National Party (PNP) administrations in the past have done enough to improve living conditions in the country. According to Mr. Seaga, the majority of Jamaicans are living without adequate access to health care, education and proper utilities and infrastructure.
"It is not that the Government of Jamaica has done nothing about these things. Every Government - PNP or JLP - has done something to fix roads, something to provide health care, something to provide water.... but the something that they have done whether, it is JLP or PNP, is not enough. It is only helping a few," Mr. Seaga said.
The JLP, he said, has moved away from that type of politics and maintained that the party was committed to serving every Jamaican.
"Both PNP and JLP Governments in the past have been creeping, and I blame no one; that is the nature of the Government with which we have had to work. We must take the decision now that no longer will we creep... now we will run, now we will jump, now we will take the great stride forward to bring a decent quality of life to every Jamaican," Mr. Seaga declared.
The JLP Leader also publicly thanked the Jamaica Constabulary Force for, what he described, as their hard work in providing security throughout the campaign period. Mr. Seaga, who has often been critical of the Police Force in the past, on Sunday night stressed that he has the greatest respect for the lawmen.
"I want to take the opportunity to say that of all the tours, we had only one incident... and I want to say publicly that I thank the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the police, for the work they have been doing. I have the greatest respect for them. Sometimes I have a problem, never with the Police Force, only with those who disgrace their uniform," he said.
