The bushy traffic islands

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE ARE three small traffic islands along Waterloo Road between the intersection of West Kings House Road and Devon Road, the vegetated portions of which are now terribly overgrown with bush and weeds. These still show some signs that they were suitably landscaped some long time ago.

The community surrounding this area may be considered to be fairly 'upscale' with a number of well manicured properties bordering the roadway including, townhouse complexes, other individual residences, the Coconut Industry Board, the Canadian High Commission and Terra Nova Hotel.

It would be interesting to find out what efforts have been made by the public sector - represented by KSAC/Ministry of Local Government and or the National Works Agency/Ministry of Transport and Works - along with the surrounding private (sector) community, to enhance the general ambience of this major thoroughfare.

We are all aware that the "Government's purse" is extremely stretched and may not be able to accommodate these works. However, it is difficult to believe that the lack of maintenance of these small plots is due to the unavailability of surplus gardening resources in the immediate locale, and/or an absence of civic pride. It is equally difficult to accept that bureaucratic red tape has prevented the realisation of a public/private sector partnership effort, which would see to the adequate maintenance of these vegetated areas.
