THE MAJORITY of persons are of the opinion that the recently announced property tax measures are unfair and unreasonable, despite the changes which have been made to it since its announcement.
This was one of the findings of a poll conducted on behalf of the Gleaner Company by Don Anderson and his team of researchers from Market Research Services Limited. The survey was conducted between the period August 1 and August 23, and involved interviewing a total of 1,119 persons aged 18 years and over in 92 communities islandwide. The margin of error is 3.1 per cent.
A majority of 61.7 per cent said that the new property tax measures cannot be justified and are unfair to the home and property owners and the general public. There is support for this position right across the demographic spectrum. At the same time exactly 30 per cent feel that the taxes are fair and reasonable, with least support for this position understandably amongst the lower income persons.
The question asked was: 'How do you feel about the new property measures recently announced by the government?'
