Met Office predicts rain for today

THE METEOROLOGICAL Service last night predicted that today would be cloudy with outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms across the island.

A Flash Flood Watch, previously in effect for low-lying and flood prone areas of southwestern parishes, has been expanded to include such areas of the island until 5 a.m. today. A Flash Flood Watch means flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures.

As the depression moves toward the north-northeast, outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms are expected, first over southwestern parishes, before gradually spreading across the rest of the island.

The Met Office located Tropical Depression number 14 at 410 kilometres west-northwest of Negril Point.

Forecasters said Tropical Depression 14 was expected to strengthen to a tropical storm, with winds of at least 39mph (63kph), later in the day. Tropical storm warnings were issued in the Cayman Islands and parts of central and western Cuba.

As of 2:00 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT), Tropical Depression 14 had sustained winds of 35mph (55kph) and was about 105 miles (170km) southwest of Grand Cayman Island. It was drifting northeast over the Caribbean Sea at about 5mph (7kph).
