A resident of Rock Hall, St. Andrew, wept yesterday, following the brutal killing of her 65-year-old church brother, Deacon Jonathan Levy, who was among seven persons killed in the community yesterday.
VIOLENCE IN sections of the Corporate Area yesterday claimed at least nine lives, left a district constable nursing gunshot wounds and sporadic gun battles between rival gunmen.
There were also reports that a group of policemen were pinned down at the Bull Bay All-Age School.
These incidents followed Tuesday night's attack in Barbican, St. Andrew in which three persons were shot and injured.
The police also reported that there was heavy gunfire in the Hannah Town, Oxford Street area of West Kingston in which a man believed to be from the Regent Street area of Denham Town was killed.
Earlier, the small district of Car Hill in Rock Hall, rural St. Andrew, was plunged into mourning after gunmen went on a rampage killing seven persons including a 65-year-old deacon.
Six of the seven victims were from one family, killed in separate groups of three, 15 minutes apart.
Jonathan Levy, deacon of the Bethel Reform Church of God in Car Hill, his daughter Tasia Lee, 22, and her 24-year-old husband, Khani Lee, were killed at one yard.
In another yard further down the road the bodies of Mr. Levy's relatives; Angela Davis, 35, Jacqueline Baugh, 20, and her 15-year-old brother, Joel Baugh remained on the ground for some time.
The other victim, Marlon Campbell, who was killed in the vicinity of a polling station, at Rock Hall Primary School. It is alleged that the family of six were killed in reprisal for the death of Mr. Campbell.
"The killings have nothing to do with politics," said Superintendent Calvin Benjamin, the Crime Officer for Area 5.
According to police sources, the problem surrounds the disappearance of an illegal firearm, said to be stolen from a gang member in the area. The police said since the theft of the gun at least eight persons have been killed.
It is reported that Mr. Campbell was attacked and killed about 6:00 a.m. Half an hour later gunmen invaded the home of Mr. Levy and opened fire on other relatives.
Family members said Mr. Levy was in the process of leaving his home for work when the gunmen struck. Those who were outside the yard at the time were not spared. One of Mr. Levy's daughters and her four children had to lock themselves inside, until the gunmen left.
Women, children and the elderly wept aloud after viewing the body of the deacon.
