Effective Opposition needed

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE BE kind enough to convey my sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Patterson and the People's National Party for their achieving a record-breaking and unprecedented election victory.

I would also offer my commiseration to Mr. Seaga and the Jamaica Labour Party.

Furthermore, they may have failed to obtain a majority, but they have succeeded in putting into place the possibility of a vigorous and effective Opposition, which we hope will relentlessly monitor the governing party to work in the best interests of the Jamaican people.

The achievements of a government is, in my opinion, a reflection of the quality of the opposition. I anticipate an opposition that will stand up and fight, instead of walking out in protest, because it serves no interest to the people you represent.

Finally, it is ironic how we, as electors, go about destroying our neighbours and acquaintances for these politicians who maintain friendly relations with each other, during and after the election banter is over. We need to learn the politicians only have verbal fisticuffs to get our votes.

I am etc.,

CHESTER D. EBANKS
