Women's confab for Montego Bay

By Roy Sanford, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

A NON-PROFIT organisation based in Montego Bay, is hosting a women's conference at its offices in the city on October 21, aimed at addressing a number of issues facing women in western Jamaica at the Family and Parenting Centre.

Dr. Beverly Scott, the main speaker at the conference, told The Gleaner in an interview that some of the topics that will be discussed includes, How to Speak the Language of Love to your Spouse, How to Become a responsible Woman, How to Identify Warning Signs in Courtship, among others.

"Women who attend the conference can expect solutions to some of these problems and other issues that they face," Dr. Scott, who is a well-known family counselor, motivational speaker, TV host and writer, said. "Those who are married can expect that there will be changes in their partners, because they are going to have changes within themselves. Those who are not married can expect to learn to look out for warning signs in courtship or how to be responsible women on a whole."

Dr. Scott said the conference, which is being held under the theme "More than Conquerors," is important at this time since women face an overwhelming amount of issues that can be easily solved. "We at the Family and Parenting Centre deal with people who are experiencing simple things and if they cannot deal with them it can be disastrous to them," she noted.

She said the majority of issues the centre deals with are abuse, lack of communication, negative attitudes at home and sexuality. According to Dr. Scott, the conference is designed as a response to some of these issues.

Dr. Scott said that although the conference was designed specifically for women, men are also invited especially to the evening session. "We want to show and tell the men about some of the things that we have discovered during the conference," she stated. "We want to show them what we think they should do and what we require of them and we want to show them that we appreciate what they have been doing."
