William Knibb Memorial High joined Grange Hill at the top of Group Two in the Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after scoring a hard fought 1-0 win over parish rivals Cedric Titus Comprehensive in their rescheduled game played at the Elleston-Wakeland Comm-unity Centre yesterday.
Delroy Ellis' well-taken header in the eighth minute decided the keenly game between two evenly matched teams for the full 90 minutes.
The game was played on the newly reconfigured field which was turned to run in an east to west direction but because of a mostly overcast sky, neither goalkeeper had any problems with the sun shining directly in their eyes.
Cedric Titus dominated the second half and had the better of chances but failed to capitalise while William Knibb's second string goalkeeper Nish Sterling, made full use of the opportunity to start with a series of fine saves.
William Knibb scored off virtually their first serious attack. Ellis met Jerome Hines' nicely floated free kick from the right side and powered it into the back of the net past goalkeeper Kenille Virgo.
Cedric Titus had two good chances soon after to level but Marlon Stewart and Dalton Gibson both wasted them. Stewart should have levelled the scores after 15 minutes when he was left unmarked on the right side of the William Knibb goal and despite having all the time he wanted, placed the shot wide of the target.
Two minutes later Gibson turned nicely almost on the penalty spot but his shot was pushed over the bar for a corner by Sterling.
The Clarks Town-based Cedric Titus had another good chance at the start of the second half when Oraine Miller stole the William Knibb kick off, worked his way nicely into the area through the William Knibb defence but shot inches wide of the goal.
They came perilously close in the 49th minute when Sterling was beaten by a ball from the right but Leighton Clarke was well placed to clear it literally off the goal line and out of danger.
William Knibb's best chance of the second half was wasted by Ricardo Geddes who managed to get behind the Cedric Titus defence in the 55th minute and with goalkeeper Virgo at his mercy, scooped the ball high over the cross bar.
The competition continues tomorrow with the second set of matches in the Inter-Zone round.
