Seaga JAMAICA LABOUR Party (JLP) parliamentarians have voted to retain Edward Seaga as leader and the Leader of the Opposition, according to a release issued yesterday by the party.
The JLP's new parliamentary committee, comprising its newly elected 26 Members of Parliament voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to retain Mr. Seaga as leader, the party release said. The Standing Committee which also met at the Belmont Road headquarters on Tuesday night unanimously endorsed a similar resolution, according to general secretary Dr. Ken Baugh said.
"Mr. Seaga, therefore, remains fully entrenched as leader of the JLP and the Parliamentary Opposition," the release said.
Asked to comment on the development last night, Mr. Seaga said that he would do so in a national public broadcast which will be made on Sunday. The broadcast was originally planned for tonight but has now been rescheduled for Sunday at a time to be announced.
Mr. Seaga would not comment on the gist of Sunday's speech, but said that he would not be announcing his party's Senators until next week, at which time he will also name a Shadow Cabinet.
He explained that the Shadow Cabinet will be unusual, as it will split a number of portfolios which normally go together in order to spread out the responsibilities.
"It will be a little on the large side," he added.
