THE EDITOR, Sir:
PLEASE GIVE me space to address a matter of great distress to not only myself but should be also of equal distress to the well thinking persons in Jamaica.
This is the "womb to the tomb," "breast to their burials" scenario which seems to be the order of the day for the children of our country.
It seems that when a child is being delivered, the same towel which wraps the tender head will be the same cloth that is to be saved for use shortly, as the burial shroud.
It seems further that whilst we, as mothers, fill nursing bottles we are preoccupied with thoughts of vials of blood. The reality is, the children are becoming increasingly the casualties of wars that they did not start and wars they do not understand.
The normal order of expectations have been disrupted in that it used to be birth, growth, education, marriage, burial . Now the birth and burial seem to be so close. The future, our children are being sacrificed on the altar of greed and hypocrisy. The speeches are coming, the tears are flowing, but still our children are dying.
The term "from the womb to the tomb" therefore is extended to include from the breasts to the burials.
Where will it end?
I am etc.,
