Protruding shacks, stalls to be cleared from gorge

LINSTEAD:

THE ST. Catherine Traffic Department has called for the co-operation of the St. Catherine Parish Council to have vendors removed when their shacks/stalls protrude onto the roadways, particularly along the Bog Walk Gorge.

Inspector Stanley Gardner, who is in charge of the traffic department, speaking at the Bog Walk Gorge road on Wednesday, explained that several minor accidents have occurred as motorists are not very careful in avoiding the stalls that protrude onto the roadway.

The traffic police said this is particularly the case in terms of vendors selling fruits along the Bog Walk Gorge, who usually obstruct drivers.

Meanwhile, Spanish Town's Mayor, Councillor Owen Stephenson, told The Gleaner that, for sometime now, the Government has been in negotiations with the owner of a lot of land not far from where the vendors are selling on the Bog Walk Gorge.

Unfortunately, this deal was never pursued, according to Mayor Stephenson.

The Mayor explained to the traffic department and other interested parties that the government had offered to build proper selling facilities for the vendors with adequate sanitary conditions.

The Parish Council said these facilities were not in place at the present time.

What are the vendors saying about these facilities?

One vendor, Kathleen Murdock, said that the site in question was far from the main road and the travelling public would not be able to reach the vendors.

However, the matter will be dealt with at Parish Council meetings, with the hope that an amicable solution can be arrived at.
