NORMAN MANLEY, St. Andrew Technical, Kingston Technical and St. Jago High will have their final chances over the next few days to capture the two remaining quarter-final spots in the 2002 Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup football competition.
They will be looking to join Excelsior and Wolmer's (Group A), Jamaica College and Spanish Town (Group B), defending champions Bridgeport and Camperdown (Group C), Kingston College and Jonathan Grant (Group D), Dunoon (Group E) and Charlie Smith (Group F) in the 12-team round, which starts the week after next.
An interesting battle is expected at the Spanish Town Prison Oval next Tuesday when St. Jago and Kingston Technical clash in a rescheduled game, a clash St. Jago must win.
Their first game ended 1-0 in favour of Kingston Technical at Clan Carthy but St. Jago were leading 3-1 in the return leg when the referee blew off the game because of bad light, nine minutes from time.
Both teams will be playing for the remaining spot alongside early qualifiers Charlie Smith. However, before that, tomorrow St. Andrew Technical (STATHS) enter their game against Dunoon knowing that only a win can push them ahead of
Norman Manley on goal difference.
If STATHS (11 points) fail to win against their fellow technical school, Norman Manley (14 points) will take second place behind Dunoon. At the same time, if Dunoon (18 points) lose against 1987 champions STATHS they still can't be passed on points as both challenging teams will end up on 14 each.
In yesterday's rescheduled games, all of which were of academic interest, Valentine Gardener's lone strike gave Spanish Town (25 points, 10 games) a win over Clan Carthy and added pressure on Group B leaders Jamaica College (28, 11 games) for first place.
At Emmett Park, goals from Omar Henry (48th and 52nd) and Delron Burnett (15th) led Ascot to a 3-2 win over Holy Trinity for whom Rory Wynter (18th) and Lennox Wright (75th penalty) scored.
