Knight says sorry over sniper issue

Ambassador Cobb

MINISTER OF Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, K.D. Knight met yesterday with US Ambassador Sue Cobb on the arrest of two persons in connection with the Washington D.C. US sniper shootings.

Minister Knight requested that the Ambassador convey to her government condolences on behalf of the government and people of Jamaica for the unfortunate deaths of ten persons and the shooting of three others. He noted that it was, "with a deep sense of anguish and sorrow that we learnt of the Jamaican connection of one of the two persons arrested in relation to the sniper shootings."

He pledged Jamaica's continued co-operation with US law enforcement authorities in the ongoing investigations and provided details of the Government's inquiries into the nationality of John Lee Malvo - the 17-year-old boy who was arrested. The Minister confirmed that a Lee Boyd Malvo was registered as having been born in Kingston on February 18, 1985.

Ambassador Cobb, for her part, expressed appreciation for the assistance that has been provided thus far and stated that it was unfortunate that a Jamaican is alleged to have been involved in "this tragic set of events".

Both Minister Knight and Ambassador Cobb emphasised the strong bond of friendship that continues to characterise the Jamaica-US relationship while, at the same time, observing that the vast majority of Jamaicans who live in the US are hardworking, law abiding persons who share the deep sense of sorrow at the shootings.

The meeting ended with an understanding to examine various areas where bilateral and international co-operation can be enhanced.
