THE EDITOR, Sir:
I NOTE with keen interest that Dr. Wykeham McNeill has retained his Western Westmoreland seat for the PNP. His victory at the polls also reflects an increase in support from 56 per cent in 1997 to 61 per cent in 2002, while at the same time garnering more votes in an election noted for a low voter turnout.
This victory came against a national trend, which saw the PNP declining in popular support over the 1997 election. This I believe represents one of the great successes of the 2002 poll, along with Richard Azan (PNP),and Shahine Robinson (JLP). If one was to listen to the so-called 'political analysts,' commentators and pollsters, this was billed to be a battleground seat, with McNeill in deep trouble.
Most persons, except the people of West Westmoreland, seem to have bought in to this perception and hype, to the extent that four days before the election the JLP had all their top people running up and down in PNP country.
Dr McNeill's success against this background must be attributed to his high level of representation and achievements, a strong and committed organisation led by campaign manager Fiona Rerrie and his peaceful and all-inclusive style of leadership.
Let West Westmoreland 2002 be a lesson to all political watchers.
I am etc.,
ANDRE H. FOOTE.
