Schoolboy football - Rusea's eliminate Cornwall

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

CORNWALL COLLEGE'S two-year run as Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup schoolboy champions ended yesterday when they were beaten 2-0 by long-time rivals Rusea's Comprehensive in their Group One inter-zone match at Jarrett Park.

Jermaine Brown scored with a dipping shot from well outside the area that hit the underside of the crossbar on its way into the goal while substitute Lordian Palmer benefitted from poor play by defender Jahvon Russell to finish the round with a perfect record of three wins.

Rusea's, who avenged a 2-0 loss to Cornwall at the same venue in the quarter-final round last year, advanced to the quarter-finals along with Group winners Grange Hill, St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), Garvey Maceo, Titchfield and Old Harbour while William Knibb and Munro grabbed the two places reserved for the best two second-place finishers.

Grange Hill, who beat William Knibb 2-1 in the Group Two feature at Rusea's with goals from Martin Williams, were the only other team to finish with a perfect inter-zone record and qualified for their first quarter-finals in style.

Despite the loss, the Paul 'Tegat' Davis coached William Knibb finished with six points while Munro, who beat Bellefield 3-0 at STETHS, tied with Garvey-Maceo with seven points in Group Four but had an inferior goal-difference.

Creighton Carnegie scored twice while former national Under-17 captain Copeland Lewis got the other for Munro who scored all their goals in the second half.

At Jarrett Park, Cornwall's season ended where it started nearly two months ago when they opened with a 2-0 win over Herbert Morrison. The Dr Dean Weatherly coached Cornwall who needed to win by five clear goals and hope for a favorable result in the other Group One game, dominate the game for the first 20 minutes through the mid field that included Kirkland Smith and national player Dane Richards.

Richards ended his schoolboy career under a cloud however as he was sent off in the 75th minute by referee Hughill Thompson after collecting his second yellow card of the game. Richards had by then seemingly lost interest in the game in the second half and was a mere spectator for most of the time.

Their best two chances of the game however went to 14-year-old Omroy Wilson who was making his first start of the season, but missed both badly.

Cornwall started better against a Rusea's team that was without captain Ricardo Collins and defender Cliffroy Vidal and it took a brilliant save by goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett in the sixth minute to keep out a low, hard shot from Kirkland Smith.

Wilson missed his first chance in the 15th minute when he was left unmarked on the left side of the penalty box but shot wide after a good pass from the right flank.

  • Manning Cup football - N Manley advance to second round

    Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

NORMAN MANLEY High advanced to the second round of the Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup football competition yesterday when St. Andrew Technical High (STATHS) lost 2-0 to Dunoon.

STATHS entered yesterday's game against Dunoon needing to win by at least a goal but the Bumper Hall-based school faltered at the final hurdle.

In a slow-paced game, Dunoon took a 2-0 halftime lead, which stunned the home team.

Talfanie Fairley gave Dunoon the lead in the 11th minute and that was increased in the 37th minute with a Shawn Tavares' strike.

At the end of the game, spectators were calling for the coaching staff of STATHS to be removed.

Meanwhile, with 10 of the 12 qualifiers known before yesterday's round of games, some teams were just trying to secure Walker Cup berths ahead of next Friday's start.

Wolmer's 3-0 win over Ardenne put them into the Walker Cup quarter-finals, while Spanish Town 0-0 draw against Innswood set them back for a spot.

However, victory for Spanish Town against Group B leaders Jamaica College on Tuesday will secure their Walker Cup berth as the next best second-placed team ahead of Camperdown.

    YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

Holy Trinity 1 Excelsior 4, Wolmer's 3 Ardenne 0, Denham Town 3 St. Catherine 2, STATHS 0 Dunoon 2, Innswood 0 Spanish Town 0, Donald Quarrie vs Clan Carthy - not played.
