THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE been listening to the commentaries of Wilmot 'Mutty' Perkins for a number of years. This, over the period since his Talk Show on KLAS through to HOT 102 and to his present sojourn at Power 106. While I must admit that he has stimulated reasonable discussions on a number of subjects, I think he has been going overboard with his comments regarding the government of the People's National Party (PNP) and its officers.
Leading up to the recently held general election, it is my opinion that he was on a campaign against the PNP. There was never a day that he did not find something to say about the running of the country by the PNP and to suggest that all ills would be corrected if they were voted out of office.
The elections were held on October 16 and the will of the people, who chose to exercise their right, was that the PNP should have another term in office.
I listened to Mr. Perkins on Thursday and Friday after the elections and it seems as if he is still on the campaign trail. He may not have liked the outcome of the election but I think he should respect the will of the people and move his commentary to a different level. His constant venom for the PNP has now become quite boring and the comments of the people he is attracting to his programme are also very offensive.
The PNP did not elect itself to office. If things were as bad as Mr. Perkins would want us to believe, the people of Jamaica would have voted the P.J. Patterson administration out of office on election day.
It is my opinion that the time has come for the management of Power 106 to have a serious talk with Mr. Perkins regarding his show, Perkins On Line. If he cannot be convinced to make some changes to his commentaries, I am of the firm belief that he should be retired in the public interest. The airtime from 10 a.m to 2:30 p.m. can be used in a more constructive way.
I am, etc.,
