MORE THAN 2OO persons from Whitfield Town, Myrrhvilla, Rome and Trench Town in St. Andrew spent the day on Saturday learning the basic principles of environmental stewardship and uniting to draw up action plans for addressing problems in their communities.
The three-day meeting, launched Friday night as the "Inner-City Environmental Workshop," continued yesterday at Immaculate Conception High School Hall in St. Andrew with presentations from noted environmental experts and group sessions.
The workshop was hosted by the Franciscan Ministries and the Inner-City United Development Council (IUDC).
On Saturday, the young people were shown video presentations, after which general discussions took place.
Among the presentations were "Earth To Sea and Watershed Concerns," presented by NEPA's Thera Edwards; "Water Pollution and related Health Issues", presented by Gladsford Gordon, an inspector attached to the Public Health Department; "Coastal Management", presented by Peter Espeut from Caribbean Coastal Area Management (CCAM), and "Waste Not", presented by Suwanee Caine of the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET).
Participants were also expected to learn about how environmental projects were funded from programmes such as the Canada/Jamaica Green Fund.
