FIREFIGHTERS AT the May Pen Fire Station are now mourning the tragic lost of one of their colleagues who succumbed to injuries in hospital on Friday as a result of gunshots he received.
The dead firefighter is 55-year-old Leslie Logan of Mineral Heights Housing Scheme in May Pen.
Mr. Logan was shot and injured along with his nephew Kailon Thomas last Wednesday night while at a family gathering at his mother's home in Toll Gate. The two were allegedly shot when gunmen travelling in a car opened fire on the gathering for what is thought to be a reprisal for three men who were released from prison on charges of murder for a man who was killed in the community last year June.
He was taken to the May Pen Hospital then was later transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and subsequently died at about midday on Friday.
Mr. Logan, who has served 27 years as a firefighter, is described as a team player who was always friendly to his colleagues. "Corporal Logan was the type of person who liked to interact; he was a friendly person. At all times you look at Corporal Logan, you have to laugh because he is coming with some jokes," said Deputy Supt. Errol Hope of the May Pen Fire Station.
He said Mr. Logan joined the fire service on February 1, 1975 as a driver where he served at both the May Pen and Frankfield fire stations and rose to the rank of a Corporal up to the time of his death.
Deputy Supt. Hope told The Gleaner that he was at home when one of his colleagues called him and told him that Corporal Logan got shot and I said how...and then I went and look for him on Thursday (at the May Pen Hospital). He was talking and I asked him if he is alright and he said no Supa, mi caan feel nutten outta mi foot dem and his hands too."
The Deputy Supt. said although he would be replaced by someone else, he would long be remembered by colleagues at the May Pen Fire Station.
