Wright, Elliott win big

FLORIDA-BASED Moses "Blacka" Wright and Vincent Elliott won the 2002 Air Jamaica World Championship of Dominoes at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios last Saturday night when they defeated the mixed pair of Richard Daley (Jamaica) and Garth Gallier (US) in the grand final to walk away with the fantastic cash prize of US$25,000.

In addition, Wright and Elliott, both members of the West Palm Beach Domino Club in Florida, captured the Victoria Mutual Championship Trophy following their 6-4, 6-3, 5-6 and 6-0 victory over Daley and Gallier who went unbeaten in 12 games to the final, only to stumble at the last hurdle.

Wright, one of the best domino players this island has produced before he migrated to Florida some years ago, had previously played in this tournament on two occasions but never managed to reach the semi-final stage.

On this occasion, the former national player and his partner played some flawless domino in the final, really laying it on in the last game to win six love.

Although beaten decisively in the final, Daley and Gallier claimed the US$15,000 runner-up prize, while Jamaica's Earl Johnson and Evron Clarke of St. Ann stopped Manchester's Alvin Powell and Donovan Williams for the US$10,000 third prize with the losers claiming US$5,000 for fourth.

St. Lucia's pair of Monica and Anela Charles toppped the women's section, beating the Jamaicans Suzette Doyle and Ivylyn Doyle. A total of 180 teams from home and abroad participated in the tournament.

Sponsors were Air Jamaica, Victoria Mutual Building Society, Sandals, Ting, Cable & Wireless, RJR, TVJ, Jamaica Observer, KLAS-FM, Island Car Rentals and GKRS-FX Traders.
