Remembering Michael Manley

THE EDITOR, Sir:

BECAUSE HE introduced so many rapid and radical changes in Jamaica, and some that even impacted on other parts of the world, there are Jamaicans who say they impacted negatively on Jamaica and therefore "there lies the villain."

However, as one looks around he or she can see some of the good things coming from his policies. Jamaica is still benefiting from the San Jose' oil accord with Venezuela.

Our embracing the idea of trade with hemisphere countries of the South, most of which have a similar standard of economic development as us, hence we are able to reasonably compete with them.

Witness the flow of goods into Jamaica, from Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Brazil, Costa Rica, CARICOM States, Indonesia, Korea.

Benefits derived from this intra-regional trade might have helped us to weather the 'economic storms' of the 1990s.

So as a nation benefiting from these gains let us remember some of these good things done by Michael Manley.

I am, etc.,
