Politicians must foster unity

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE WAY forward is for our leaders to educate the citizens of the need for co-operation to expose wrongdoing and perpetrators of illegal acts.

In the last political campaign, millions of dollars were spent motivating the electorate to choose a new government. Motivation? Yes the question of motivating the public to stamp out crime or reducing it to a level that is tolerant can be done, similar to the running of election campaigns. Cost should not be a factor when human lives are being taken without thought.

The politicians have the power to motivate, mobilise and influence behavioural patterns of our people.

The security forces and the Jamaican public cannot do it by themselves but through a unified effort, beginning with the politicians the people and the police - motivation through proper community communication.

Political tribalism, garrison politics the spin-off from as far back as 35 years ago began with the politicians. The change can begin with politicians too.

I am, etc.,
