Crime and tourism do not mix

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA, THE land of wood and water, a land with a rich cultural heritage, the land that boasts the big names in track and music. The land from which many a brilliant mind has been nurtured now employed by international companies, the land from which scores of beautiful women have come. As popular as the land is for these attributes, it has also gotten increasingly popular for the alarming rate of criminal activities.

What is it that is causing this barrage of inhumane activities to plague Jamaica? Is it politics, is it financial woes or just the desperately wicked and evil heart of man being manifested?

Jamaica depends a great deal on tourism for foreign exchange, disregarding the wealth of natural resources the land possesses. The advertisements done internationally, are really breathtaking, exposing the natural beauty of the land, but...it has an adversary - crime. It doesn't matter the millions spent on these commercials if something is not done to rectify the current state of Jamaica; people will take their monies elsewhere.

And what of the pastors? Are they really called by God or are they just doing their own thing? If there is one that's righteous he could perhaps stand in the gap. The scriptures say the fervent effectual prayer of a righteous man avails much. It's not just standing in the public place like the Pharisee or hypocrites do, to prove that you are holy. It's being sure of your righteous relationship with God, therefore affording you the boldness to go before God and make petition on the nation's behalf. Is there one? Is there a Daniel out there?

It worked in Daniel's time and it could work again.

I am, etc.,
