BLACK RIVER:
THE ST. Elizabeth Parish Development Committee (PDC) has donated a Global Positioning System (GPS) to the Planning Department of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council to assist with the department's data storing and survey monitoring.
Chairman of the PDC, Jason Henzell, told The Gleaner on Wednesday, the donation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) followed a request from the Director of Planning of the Council, Delroy Brown, to improve the operations of that department.
The GPS is a computer device that can be used to store data and can serve as a surveying pointer. Mr. Henzell said the equipment would be needed to explain geographical safety for building either domestic or commercial properties.
According to Mr. Brown, the donation from the PDC will transform his department of the agency and the Geographic Information System (GIS) at the Council would be improved greatly. He said that the Planning Department will now be able to identify all landmarks and the agencies owned properties and to updating land maps.
"The GPS has a 24 hour satellite component to it, so we are now in a position to track all surveying pointers and landmarks. It will also help us to deliver a more efficient service to the public," Mr. Brown stressed. The St. Elizabeth Parish Council was the first of the island's Parish Councils to be equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS).
