Health concerns raised over fishing complex - again

LINSTEAD:

THE ST. Catherine Health Authority has again expressed concerns over the physical and sanitary conditions of the Old Harbour Bay fishing complex.

Chief Public Health Inspector for the parish Samuel Cameron told The Gleaner earlier this week that although residents from the community attempt to clean the complex from time to time, the fishing beach is not being kept clean enough nor is it being cleaned daily as it should.

Mr. Cameron and fellow public health inspector Everton Francis say proper garbage collection bins need to be placed at strategic points along the beach for fish entrails and scales to be placed and not dumped on the open complex.

The Health Department claims that when the fish guts are not properly disposed of this attracts flies and rodents to the complex creating a health and environmental hazard.

The public health authorities say that the St. Catherine Parish Council which has responsibility for the complex should have signs placed at strategic points along the beach indicating clearly that the vendors obey such rules for their health sake and for the protection of the environment."

Dogs, pigs and goats can also be seen frequently roaming the complex and efforts should be made according to the Health Authority to keep out these animals.
