ONE MAN was shot dead, another shot and injured and a third held up and robbed of an undetermined sum of money and a licensed firearm in criminal activities in downtown Kingston, yesterday.

Two of the victims were customers who had gone to transact business at a bank on Duke Street. They were attacked while returning to their vehicles.

Reports are that the first incident occurred shortly before midday, as an electrical contractor, Martin Linton, walked out of the CIBC Bank, at the intersection of Duke and Laws streets. Allegations are that he was held up and shot in the chest by gunmen, within split seconds of leaving the bank. He ran into his pick-up, but only managed to drive to the intersection of John's Lane and Laws Street, where he collapsed around the steering wheel.

Mr. Linton was still in hospital up to late yesterday evening police said. The men escaped on foot.

About two hours later, criminals pounced on another customer leaving the same bank and heading to his vehicle. Police confirmed that the man was robbed of a quantity of cash and a licensed firearm.

The Gleaner understands that criminals have been hanging out in the vicinity of the bank over the past three weeks preying on customers. The police confirmed the story.

The third incident, a fatal one, occurred after 1:00 p.m. at a bus stop near the corner of Widows Lane and Victoria Avenue in Central Kingston. The victim, was identified by the police as Patrick Evans, alias "Comfri", who allegedly escaped from the Central Police lock-up about two years ago.

He was being sought in connection with a double murder which took place last month in the vicinity of the Pearnel Charles Arcade. Police believe he was shot by persons known to him.

The police said that a 9-mm pistol with two magazines and 21 rounds were taken from Evans' body. He was shot in the head and left wrist. Police said the gun was stolen from a motorcar on Ocean Boulevard on June 24.
