THE EDITOR, Sir:
I MUST commend the Prime Minister for resurrecting the Values and Attitudes programme.
One of the best ways for a producer to sell his product is to use that product, thus demonstrating to the public that he believes what he is telling them.
I am therefore suggesting that the values and attitudes programme begin in Parliament. We could begin with the House Speaker showing respect for the opinions of both sides instead of being biased. Special attention must be paid to what takes place in Parliament, especially during debates. It is at these times that some of the poorest displays of values and attitudes are exhibited by our Members of Parliament, the Budget debates being examples.
What we see on television and hear on radio contradict the sermon that is being preached.
Honesty should be one of our top priorities. How can we point fingers at someone who admits that he had been associated with gunmen when we control 16 garrison constituencies?
All but the most naive in our society know how garrisons are run and who controls them.
If we are serious about convincing people, especially our young people, that we are genuine believers in this programme, we will have to start living what we preach. Until then we are only beating the air.
I am, etc.,
