THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a retired principal of a high school. I was invited to Canada to visit my sister and family during August 2002. As my passport had expired, I went in April to get it renewed. I was told that my marriage certificate was outdated, so I needed to have a certified copy.
On the 6th June 2002, I made an application to the Registrar General's Department. I paid $1,390 for it to be processed by the three-hour express service. I arrived there at 8 a.m. and when I was leaving at 4.30 p.m., I was informed that they needed more time, so I would get it within seven working days.
I anxiously waited for the seven working days to pass, then went to collect the document. After waiting for eight hours, I was told that it was not ready.
I decided then to use the telephone to check on the situation.
After calling every day for five weeks, I was advised to send in a fax with the information, and this I did. When I called a few days later, I was told that the fax was not received, although I have seen no evidence to the contrary.
When I called mid-August, I was advised to reapply by telephone, as I had explained that I have a knee problem which makes standing or walking difficult.
I have asked on several occasions if there was a problem and I was informed that there was none.
In recent weeks, each time I call, I am asked to hold on so that I can be referred to another worker. After waiting for three or more minutes the telephone is hung up.
I am desperately in need of the document, and would really like to know what steps I should take to get it. After four months of waiting and calling one can really become frustrated and annoyed.
I am, etc.,
