Baby killed by gunman

THE LIFE of a seven-month-old boy, Daniel Antonio Shirley, came to a tragic end yesterday when a bullet discharged by a gunman struck him in the head at about 5:10 p.m.

Reports are that the child was in the arms of his grandmother who was standing at the intersection of Hannah and Oxford streets in West Kingston, when the fatal bullet hit the infant. "He was taken to the nearby Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) where he died. The police have not yet established a motive," Corporal Dahlia Garrick told The Gleaner yesterday.

Operation's Officer for Kingston West, Deputy Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, said residents claimed the shot came from the lower end of Oxford Street. But there are allegations that the shot might have been fired from elsewhere and that the infant was hit accidentally.

Since January the lives of 15 children have been snuffed out by gunmen.
