OVER THE next 20 months, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) will be engaged in the maintenance dredging of the Hunts Bay Estuary, which includes cleaning of the Sandy Gully in St. Andrew.
The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, involving the cleaning of the Sandy Gully, is already underway and should be completed by January 2003. This involves the removal and trucking of some 200,000 cubic metres of silt and debris from the concrete lined section of the gully, between Spanish Town Bridge/Weymouth Drive and Railway Bridge. The debris exceeds a height of 4 feet in some instances.
Phase 2, which will run simultaneously with Phase 1, will involve the dredging of the Hunts Bay Estuary. This is intended to restore the capacity and enhance the capability of the estuary to trap silt coming from the Rio Cobre, Sandy Gully, Duhaney River and Jew Gully, thereby reducing the impact of silt on the Kingston Harbour.
While the debris is being removed, businesses, homeowners and motorists in the vicinity of the work site and along the route are encouraged to obey flagmen who have been placed there for their safety. The trucks will travel along lower Weymouth Drive, Spanish Town Road (Nanse Pen) and the north side of Sandy Gully leading to the Riverton Dump.
The UDC, through its contractor, West Indies Home Contractors Limited, will carry out regular sprinkling of the area to minimise dust nuisance, which may result from the operations.
