JohnsonLED by goals from Jermaine Johnson in the 56th minute and Paul Hall 58th Jamaica inched to the top of the group in the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying tournament after registering a 2-0 victory over Guadeloupe yesterday.
The Reggae Boyz moved to four points from two games, one ahead of Guadeloupe. At press time last night the pointless Grenada were facing Barbados on one point.
Jamaica began the match in an attacking mood but had very little to show for the first half except for six cornerkicks.
In the 38th minute forward Fabian Taylor missed a golden chance to put the Jamaicans in the lead when he rushed onto a cross from Craig Ziadie but his attempt was ill directed.
In the 40th minute, Jermaine Johnson had a crack at goal from about 25 yards, but it soared harmlessly over the bar.
After the break Jamaica came out looking more purposeful, and more attacking, altering the 5-3-2 formation to use three forwards.
The move paid off almost immediately, as Johnson, the man who was pushed up to partner Fabian Taylor and Paul Hall, made it 1-0 in the 56th minute. Paul Hall had picked up a loose ball and made a break-away pass to Johnson who slotted to give Jamaica the lead.
Two minutes later, a Robert Scarlett found Hall who registered his second goal in as many matches.
Substitute Andrew Williams got the chance to make it 3-0 in the 83rd minute but with only the goalkeeper to beat, he lobbed high over the bar.
