THE EDITOR, Sir:
I FEEL compelled to bring to your attention that I had the opportunity to meet a remarkable member of the Police Force.
I am speaking of Sgt. Noel Davis from the Office of Professional Responsibility located at 34 Duke Street, Kingston.
On Friday November 1, 2002 I was driving along East Queen Street heading towards South Camp Road when suddenly my vehicle began to shake and refused to budge. There I was in the middle of the road with horns blaring behind me and not so friendly motorists shouting at me with disgust. I started to panic. Then I looked outside and saw the kindest face looking at me with genuine concern. All I could say was "I need help." Within seconds Sgt. Davis alighted from his police vehicle and was by my side. He inspected my vehicle and told me that the gas line was loose. He quickly solicited help to push me out of the road and started to look around for a mechanic to fix the problem. I remembered that the car was serviced the day before and he offered to take me to my servicemen. Not only did he take me there he made sure that I asked the right questions and even went so far as to wait with me while the servicemen called the wrecking service. He was kind enough to take me back to my vehicle to wait on the wrecker. Upon leaving his vehicle I thanked him once more and said goodbye. Then Claudette, the street vendor who had seen everything shouted, "Now that's a gentleman."
Sgt. Davis was going about his own business and took the time to care. The Police Force has often times come under a lot of negative criticism and this is not at all deserving, as there are members such as Sgt. Noel Davis who go above and beyond the call of duty. We should not use the actions of a few bad apples to distort our view of the Police Force as a whole.
What could have been a bad experience turned out to be a good one as I met a gentleman, an officer of the Jamaica Police Force, my knight in shining police armour. I felt safe.
