THE COMPUTER education programme at the Jackson Primary and Junior High School in St. Mary received a major boost recently when the institution received seven computers and a printer from the Kiwanis Club of Pottstown, Pennsylvania in the United States.
This presentation coincided with the handing over of a 20-inch television and a video cassette recorder to the school by the Parent Teachers' Association (PTA).
The purchase of the computers were made possible through collaboration between the Kiwanis Club of Port Maria and its counterpart in Pottstown.
Making the presentation, Dr Garland Fisher of the Pottstown Kiwanis Club said he was pleased that the club in Port Maria was able to address an area of critical need in the school.
Dr. Fisher said he was confident that the computers would be used to improve the delivery of education at the institution.
Accepting the donation, Principal, Beverly Hylton thanked the Kiwanis Club of Pottstown, and promised that the equipment would be used in the most advantageous way.
She noted that the new computers would place the school's computer programme on par with those of many other institutions in St. Mary, adding that the school would be establishing an outreach programme to offer computer education to members of the community.
Regional Manager for the Jamaica Teachers' Association and Past Principal of the school, Vilma Munroe, said she was heartened by the assistance, and urged the students to make use of the equipment.
